We Understand Why You’re Here
Maybe that tattoo doesn’t represent who you are anymore. Maybe it’s affecting your career opportunities, or perhaps it’s tied to memories you’d rather leave behind. Whatever your reason, we want you to know - you’re not alone, and there’s absolutely no judgment here.
At Fix Med Spa, we’ve helped countless patients reclaim their skin and their confidence. We know this decision wasn’t easy, and we understand the mix of emotions you might be feeling - from excitement about a fresh start to anxiety about the removal process itself.
The good news? With our Candela PicoWay laser technology, we can create a personalized removal plan based on your tattoo’s size, colors, depth, age, and your skin.
How It Works (Without the Medical Jargon)
Here’s what’s actually happening during your treatment: our PicoWay laser works like a very precise, very gentle jackhammer. It delivers incredibly short bursts of energy that break up the tattoo ink into tiny particles - so small that your body’s natural immune system can carry them away.
Think of it this way: when you first got your tattoo, the ink particles were too big for your body to remove on its own. Our laser breaks those particles into much smaller pieces that your body can clear naturally. PicoWay’s ultra-short pulses create a primarily photoacoustic effect rather than relying on the heat-driven approach of older laser systems.
The PicoWay platform offers multiple wavelengths that can target a broad range of tattoo-ink colors. Your provider will assess the colors in your tattoo and select the appropriate approach for each session.
What to Expect During Your Visit
We know you might be nervous about your first appointment - that’s completely normal! Here’s exactly what happens, so there are no surprises.
Your Consultation (It’s Free!)
This is where we really get to know you and your goals. Our laser specialist will take a close look at your tattoo, discuss your skin type, and create a personalized treatment plan that’s right for you. We’ll also talk honestly about realistic expectations and timeline - no sugar-coating, just straight answers.
Most importantly, we’ll address your biggest concern: does it hurt? We’ll discuss all your comfort options, including topical numbing cream that we can apply 30 minutes before treatment. Many patients are pleasantly surprised by how manageable the discomfort actually is.
During Your Treatment
Let’s be honest about the sensation - it’s not completely painless, but it’s much more tolerable than most people expect. Think of it as similar to having a rubber band snapped against your skin repeatedly. We can discuss topical numbing and other comfort measures during your consultation.
Most sessions last between 15-60 minutes depending on your tattoo’s size. You might notice the treated area looks white or frosty immediately afterward - don’t worry, this is completely normal and shows the laser is working properly.
Preparing for Your Treatment
To get the best results and minimize any discomfort, here’s how to prep for your session:
- Stay out of the sun for 4-6 weeks beforehand - tanned skin doesn’t respond as well and increases risk of complications
- Hold off on retinoids for about a week before your appointment
- Shave the area if it’s particularly hairy - we need clear access to your tattoo
- Come clean on treatment day - skip the lotions, makeup, or perfumes in the area
- Let us know if you’ve ever had problems with keloid scarring - we’ll adjust our approach accordingly
Don’t stress if you forget something - we’ll go over everything during your consultation.
Taking Care of Your Skin Afterward
Here’s what’s normal after treatment and how to help your skin heal beautifully:
What to expect: Your skin might look red and feel swollen for a few days - think of it like a mild sunburn. Some people develop small blisters or scabs over the next week or two. This might look concerning, but it’s actually a sign that your body is responding well to treatment.
How to care for your skin:
- Apply the antibiotic ointment we give you as directed - this prevents infection and keeps the area moist for better healing
- Keep it clean and dry - gentle soap and water is all you need
- Protect from the sun religiously with SPF 50+ sunscreen - your treated skin will be extra sensitive
- Don’t pick or scratch even if it’s tempting - let those scabs fall off naturally
- Be patient - wait 6-8 weeks between sessions to give your skin time to fully heal and your immune system time to clear away the ink particles
Good to Know Before You Start
What Affects Your Results?
Every tattoo is unique, just like every person. Here’s what influences how your removal journey will go:
Tattoo age matters: Older tattoos are generally easier to remove because the ink has already started to break down naturally over time. That faded tattoo you got in college? It might come off faster than you think.
Professional vs. amateur tattoos: Professional tattoos use higher-quality inks and are applied more deeply, which means they typically take more sessions to remove completely. Amateur tattoos often respond more quickly.
Color makes a difference: PicoWay’s multiple wavelengths let us target a broad range of tattoo-ink colors, including colors such as blue and green that can be challenging to treat. However, some colors may lighten significantly rather than disappear completely.
Realistic expectations: Most patients need 6-12 sessions for complete removal, spaced 6-8 weeks apart. Some tattoos might only lighten to a point where they’re easily covered with makeup or new ink, rather than disappearing entirely. We’ll be honest about what’s realistic for your specific tattoo during your consultation.
Is This Treatment Right for You?
We want to make sure you’re a good candidate and get the best possible results:
If you’re pregnant or nursing, we’ll wait until after this special time in your life - safety first.
Treatment is customized to your skin: PicoWay offers tattoo-removal options for a broad range of skin tones. We select the wavelength, settings, and treatment plan based on your skin type and tattoo to reduce the risk of pigmentation changes.
Let us know about your health: If you have any autoimmune conditions, are taking medications that affect your immune system, or have a history of poor wound healing, we’ll work with you and possibly your doctor to ensure safe treatment.
